EXT. HOUSING ESTATE - FRONT ROW
Danny is standing with a notebook and pen in hand, talking to a small group of people.
DANNY
Well, you tell me what you want, I’ll add it to the list and pass it on to Maura.
GERRY
So where are they going to get the stuff? Is it from shops or people’s houses?
Danny shrugs.
GERRY
Because I’ve been thinking and I think we should get all the books from libraries. Who knows how this is going to pan out but we’ll need to learn a lot of stuff to rebuild things, you know?
EVAUGHN
Gerry…
GERRY
And like do we need to shut down like gas lines, power stations, do you know?
Danny shrugs again. Evaughn rolls her eyes.
AMY
He’s right. I saw this video a while back about what you’d actually need to do in the event of a zombie apocaplypse.
ROB
It’s not a zombie apocaplypse.
AMY
No I know but[]
TOM
I don’t know. Our neighbour got … the sickness or whatever you want to call it … I watched him bang on a window until it broke, his hands getting all cut and bloody, and he dragged himself through it tearing himself up and screaming like a wild thing the whole time - it wasn’t human. And not six feet away there’s his front door hanging wide open.
Many in the crowd nod or shake their heads at memories of similar scenes.
ROB
Yes but when they die they’re dead. I saw a lot of people die. They stayed dead.
AMY
I know. I know. You’re right, but Gerry has a point. I think if you don’t switch off the gas supplies and power stations they can explode. I can’t remember now exactly. But there was a whole load of things you’d never think would be a problem but[]
GERRY
How is this place powered? What’s it connected to?
DANNY
Look, I don’t have any answers for you. I’m just here to put together a list of items people need.
Barbara can be seen in the distance leaving the house and walking over to them.
LOTTE
Danny I think I speak for everyone when I say we’re very grateful for everything. But more than things we need answers. We want to know what’s going on.
Others in the crowd nod or murmur agreement, but not all.
EVAUGHN
Well, I need some things. Like I want answers but we need some things.
She looks to Gerry for agreement, and some people in the crowd clearly are in the same situation.
GERRY
Yes. We need clothes and toiletries. And reference manuals. And tools. Like, clear out the libraries, the bookshops, the hardware stores.
AMY
The garden centres.
GERRY
The garden centres.
RONAN
I’m with Lotte. I want to know what’s going on here. Like are there any geographical features that explain why this fog isn’t here? It didn’t feel like we were descending into a valley or going up on some plateau. But we need to figure it out and find the rest of the places that are clear.
A few people in the crowd exchange looks as if they don’t think that’s likely.
Barbara is walking up to them.
DANNY
Yeah. I don’t know. Look, (raising his voice) If you need clothes or whatever, tell me, I’ll put it on the list.
SARAH
All we’re asking is … like is this estate built in a valley or on some plateau, can’t you even tell us that?
DANNY
I’m only new here myself. I don’t know anything.
TARA
When did you come here? Which house are you in?
BARBARA
He came here with me on the first day. We drove here by accid[]
EAMONN
You’re the one living with the Furries?
Barbara pauses trying to think how to explain the gang and what she’s supposed to say.
EAMONN
(to the group, though staring at Barbara disdainfully)She’s the one that got wasted and walked out into the fog. And - d’you remember the two ludramons on the truck, yer one was crying, they started drinking, singing, being right guidermawns?
NOEL
Furries!? That’s right. I’d never even heard of it until one them roared it, right in my ear.
EAMONN
Well, they went to her house and they haven’t been seen since.
BARBARA
They took our car. They left. We didn’t do anything to them.
TOM
You live with the Furries?
BARBARA
They’re not Furries.
Barbara looks at Danny hoping he’ll back her up.
DANNY
It’s some kind of religious thing, I think.
The crowd murmurs the odd “Jaysus” and “What the” can be heard.
TARA
(to Barbara)Do you know what’s going on here?
Barbara shakes her head.
LOTTE
Well what do you think is going on?
BARBARA
Honestly? … I think I’ve been seriously assaulted and I’m in a coma and … this is my mind’s way of dealing with it. Nothing makes sense.
There are murmurs from people in the crowd about “drugs”, “degenerate” and someone says dismissively “Narcissist”. Though some look like they know the feeling.
Barbara gives up trying to discuss anything with the group.
BARBARA
I know Dearbhla wants cigarettes.
DANNY
She got them yesterday.
BARBARA
Where? How are you getting all the stuff? Can we not go there ourselves and just pick out what we want?
Some in the crowd clearly have had the same thought. They start questioning Danny again but he remains evasive.
Barbara walks away deciding to explore the rest of the estate.
