Golden Spiced Lamb

This isn’t spicy so I wasn’t sure if I should tag it a curry. In the end I did but I’m not really sure what kind of dish this is. It came about because I added a turmeric-ginger latte mix to rice one evening and stirred in some greek yoghurt when it was cooked, and I really liked it. Yes, a golden latte is the inspiration for this meal.
Turmeric is a good source of curcumin which is reputed to be very good for you. Although I’m not sure how much cooking affects the availability of curcumin. But I do like to add a little where I can.

Golden Spiced Lamb
Ingredients
- ~400g lamb pieces
- 2 medium-sized onion, peeled & sliced thinly
- 2 large garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tbsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tbsp cardamom pods, bruised
- 1 cup light stock or water
- 2 tablespoons raisins
- 2 - 3 tbsp whole natural Greek-style yoghurt
- sunflower or vegetable oil
- salt & freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Heat a little oil in a frying pan on a high heat. Rub a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper into the lamb. Add the lamb pieces into the pan and let them brown, turning them over as needed. Remove from the pan and place on a plate to add back in later.
- Add a teaspoon of the stock or water and the onion slices. Reduce the heat and scrape any brown bits on the bottom of the pan loose and mix around so they coat the onion. Cover the pan and let the onions soften for a couple of minutes.
- Add in the garlic and let it cook for a minute or two until fragrant. Add back in the lamb, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamon pods and good pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Mix arouund well so that everything is well combined. Stir in the rest of the stock or water. Turn up the heat and bring to the boil. Give it a good stir. Cover the pan, turn the heat down and leave to simmer for 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, stir in the raisins. Turn off the heat, cover the pan and leave for 5 minutes.
- Remove from the hob and stir in 2 or 3 tablespoons of whole natural Greek-style yoghurt, according to your taste. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary.
- Serve with some rice.
